Berber Rugs,
Handwoven in Morocco's Atlas Mountains
Berber rugs are the hand-knotted wool rugs woven by the Amazigh (Berber) tribes of Morocco for over a thousand years. Each tribe has its own style — from the ivory diamonds of the Beni Ourain to the vivid abstractions of the Azilal. At House of Berber, we work directly with weaving cooperatives in the Atlas Mountains to bring these rugs from the loom to your home, with no middlemen — every rug comes to you directly from the cooperative that wove it.

Our Beni Ourain Collection — the Most Iconic Berber Rug
The Beni Ourain is the Berber rug the design world fell in love with: Le Corbusier used them in his interiors, and they remain the favourite wool rug of Scandinavian and Japandi designers today. Every piece in our collection is hand-knotted by Berber women in the Middle Atlas, from undyed wool of mountain sheep.

The Berber Rug Styles, Compared
Not all Berber rugs look alike. The tribe, the region and the wool decide the style. Here is how the main families differ:
| Style | Look | Wool & pile | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beni Ourain | Ivory base, black or brown geometric diamonds | Thick, plush, undyed | Scandi, Japandi & minimalist interiors |
| Azilal | Colourful abstract motifs on a light base | Medium pile, lighter knot | Eclectic and bohemian rooms |
| Boujad | Warm pinks, oranges and reds, bold geometry | Medium pile, soft | Warm, layered, vintage-inspired spaces |
| Beni Mrirt | Refined, dense, contemporary patterns | High-density premium pile | Modern luxury interiors |
| Kilim (Hanbel) | Flatwoven, no pile, graphic patterns | Thin and light | Layering, hallways, summer months |

How to Choose Your Berber Rug
Size
In UK living rooms, a 200×300 cm rug anchors the seating area with the front legs of the sofa on the rug. For bedrooms, 150×250 cm on each side of the bed works beautifully.
Wool
A genuine Berber rug is 100% sheep wool — springy underfoot, never perfectly uniform. If the pile feels synthetic or the pattern is machine-perfect, it is a "Berber-style" rug, not a handmade one.
Authenticity
Hand-knotted rugs show their pattern on the back, knot by knot. Every House of Berber rug is hand-knotted by Berber artisans and sourced directly from the cooperative that wove it. Our guide on how to identify an authentic Berber rug shows you exactly what to look for.
Woven for you, and only you.
Choose one of our designs or commission your own — exact size, pattern and wool, hand-knotted by the cooperative that has woven them for generations.
