Authentic Beni Ourain rugs
Each rug in our collection is woven by Berber women in the Middle Atlas the same way it has been done for over a thousand years. Undyed Atlas wool, vertical wooden looms, hundreds of hours per piece. No two are identical, and none are made twice.
This month's editor picks
Eight rugs hand-selected from this season's incoming pieces. Each one comes with documented provenance the cooperative, the lead weaver's name, the months of work it took

A 1,000-year tradition, sourced directly
The Beni Ourain rug isn't a style, it's a tribal weaving tradition that predates Morocco itself. The 17 Beni Ourain tribes of the northern Middle Atlas have been knotting these rugs since the 7th century, originally as bedding and ceremonial pieces against the cold high-altitude winters.

Every rug at House of Berber is sourced directly from a partner cooperative in Sefrou, Taza or Boulemane. We do not buy from middlemen, and we do not stock imported imitations. When you order from us, you can ask which weaver made your rug and we will tell you.

What makes our Beni Ourain rugs different
The "Beni Ourain rug" market is full of imitations machine-made versions from Turkey or India, wool blends sold as pure wool, "vintage" rugs that are six months old. Here is what we guarantee on every piece in our collection:
1. 100% Atlas Mountains wool
Our wool comes from sheep grazing above 2,000 metres in the Middle Atlas. The cold climate produces a fibre that is softer, more lanolin-rich, and significantly more durable than wool from low-altitude flocks. We never blend, never mix with synthetic fibres, never use machine-spun yarn.
2. Verifiable provenance
Every rug ships with a provenance card listing the cooperative name, the village, the lead weaver, and the months of weaving work. If you ever want to verify, we can connect you directly to the cooperative.
3. Documented knot density
We list the actual knots-per-square-metre on every product page. Most of our pieces are between 12,000 and 22,000 knots/m² — the high end of authentic Beni Ourain density. Higher density means a denser pile, more stable structure, and a rug that will outlive your grandchildren.
4. Vegetal-only dyes (where dyes are used)
Most of our rugs are entirely undyed — the ivory comes from the wool itself, the dark motifs from naturally dark wool. When dye is used, it is always vegetal: henna, walnut hull, madder root. Never synthetic, never chemical. The colour ages well and never bleeds.
5. Lifetime authenticity guarantee
If at any point — even ten years from now — an independent expert determines that a rug we sold you is not what we described, we refund the full purchase price. No questions, no negotiation. We have never had to honour this guarantee, and we don’t intend to start.

For Scandinavian interiors
Pure ivory bases with single-line or simple diamond motifs. Pairs with pale oak floors, white walls, and linen sofas. The shaggy pile adds the warmth that Scandi minimalism otherwise can lack.

Black Dotted Beni Ourain Rug
For Mid-Century Modern interiors
This is the original pairing. Le Corbusier put Beni Ourain rugs in his Villa Savoye in 1929. Charles and Ray Eames had one in their Pacific Palisades home. The pairing of organic ivory wool against teak, walnut and chrome remains the most photographed look in modern interiors.
Find the perfect fit for your space
The Living Room
All furniture legs should sit on the rug to create a cohesive “island” of comfort in open spaces.
The Bedroom
Place the rug horizontally under the lower two-thirds of the bed. This ensures a soft, warm landing for your feet every morning while maintaining a balanced room proportion.
The Accent Nook
A perfect size for an entryway, a home office, or placed under a single accent chair—like an Eames Lounge Chair—to define a dedicated reading corner.

How a Beni Ourain rug is made
The full process from sheep to finished rug takes between four months and two years per piece, depending on size and knot density. There are no shortcuts.
Shearing & sorting April-May
Sheep are shorn once a year in spring. The wool is then sorted by hand for length, fineness, and natural colour. Ivory wool is separated from naturally darker fleeces.
Washing & carding 1-2 weeks
Wool is washed in cold mountain water to remove dirt while preserving the natural lanolin. Once dry, it is combed by hand to align the fibres for spinning.
Hand-spinning 3-6 weeks
A 200 × 300 cm rug requires 3km of yarn. Hand-spinning produces a slightly irregular thread that gives the rug its organic texture — a quality machines cannot replicate.
Setting up the loom 1 week
Two weavers stretch the warp threads vertically on a wooden loom made from local cedar, which stays in the family for generations.
Knotting 4-18 months
Each knot is tied individually. A skilled weaver ties 8,000 to 12,000 knots per day. A 200×300 rug represents roughly 90 working days for a single artisan.
